Smart Meters: The Latest in Home Security?

“Smart Meters” are being installed in homes and businesses all across Georgia by local utility monopolies. What makes “Smart Meters” smart? They collect your electric use data in “real-time” and transmit it wirelessly back to the utility (in Barnesville the utility monopoly is Southern Rivers Energy). This information is stored on the utility’s servers for a variety of purposes. The main advantage cited by Southern Rivers Energy (SRE) is greater service reliability, better quality of electric and quicker restoration of service after an outage. SRE claims Smart Meters will lower their costs because they no longer have to send a meter reader out. Instead, and this is important for you to understand – your use data is sent wirelessly, directly to their servers. SRE soothingly assures us, your use data can’t be hacked.

In spite of all the rhetoric for and against Smart Meters, there’s good reason to believe the following. Your electric use data will be on a utility’s server. That means any interested government party can demand that information from the utility. And the utility will hand it right over. In fact, the new NSA facility in Utah could simply tap directly into utility servers permanently – to fight the war on drugs, terrorism, and crime, of course. For those paying attention, the NSA, CIA, and the DHS have been very busy spying on ordinary citizens because doggone it, you just never know if those neighbors of yours are supporting Al-Qaeda, drug lords in Mexico, or are growing marijuana in their basement. SOMEONE has to watch out for you and that SOMEONE is Big Brother in the US federal government.

If you’re comfortable with that, then you’re going to be very comfortable and sympathetic with all US government 1984 Orwellian style surveillance programs. Go ahead and have your Smart Meter installed and let the government eye ball your electric use in real-time.

Another aspect of Smart Meters that SRE insists is not true is the future potential for remote control over your appliances in your home. You see, Smart Meters give the utility (SRE) powerful tools for controlling your electric use. Initially, this will be primarily at the meter pan level where they can remotely shut off or turn on your electric service. Any casual observer of computer networking systems will quickly understand that much, much more can be accomplished when you’re on the Smart Grid.

For example, smart appliances are now being manufactured that will communicate with your smart meter and consequently with the utility and your very helpful US government. The utility and the US government are interested in your electric consumption in context with the campaign for “Energy Independence and Sustainability” and mitigating those dangerous Green House Gasses (like CO2). If you refuse to get with the US government program and voluntarily cut your own energy use, the utility will be capable of remotely turning off or limiting the use of selected appliances through your Smart Meter.

But wait, let’s triple size your electric order. As you know, certain politicians are heavily invested in green technology. And their government position helps to ensure their investments are safe and sound. Solar power for example is “free” energy from the sun, right? From a utility electric generating position, solar and wind are actually far more costly on a cost per kilowatt than fossil fuels such as coal. Fossil fuel driven electric generators must be kept running on whatever fossil fuel they use because sun and wind are intermittent. That adds significantly to the cost of electric production. Lawsuits have been brought against Georgia Power to force it to purchase high priced solar power from one connected producer. PSC Commissioner Stan Wise has fought this and reports agendas like this have caused electric rates in Germany to soar to three times what we pay here in Georgia.

Smart Meters are capable of charging you based on the utility’s cost at the time of generating that electricity. As the utility is forced out of cheap coal and into expensive solar, you likely will be charged for your usage of the utility’s source for electric at that precise time of day. That means you could pay much higher rates for electric when the utility is purchasing solar or wind power. The US government has taken billions of your tax dollars to set up a system that artificially raises your cost of electricity, based on their political objectives. This is not free market – this is a Marxist centrally planned economy being constructed right before your eyes. And the bonus investment from your tax dollars is the government can monitor your electric use directly off the utility server.

DOE Invests taxpayer dollars but what’s your ROI?

Remote control of your thermostat?

The silly old fashioned method of private investors investing in promising new technologies is being replaced with real smart people with PhD’s sitting in special federal agencies directing investment funds to real smart industries. Be of good cheer because these special real smart people in the US federal government have numerous programs to “invest” your money in ways that will give you good clean energy and lots of jobs. That’s right. Lots of jobs and lots of clean energy.

Using unconstitutional federal agencies (but helpful, loving ones) that operate under their own administrative law outside of Congress and the Constitution; these agencies “invest” billions of tax dollars in businesses that fit their ideological agenda. From global warming to electric cars that go where the government tells them to go; federal agencies are busily spending your money while planning your future. Let’s find out how.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics says, “The Executive branch employed about 97% of all federal civilian employees (excluding Postal Service workers) in 2008. There are “about 70 independent agencies.” According to BLS, the US federal government employs approximately 2,000,000 people, making it the largest employer in the nation. At our September 22 Constitution Party of Lamar County meeting, we discussed one of those federal agencies, the Department of Energy.

DOE has a policy of investing in a variety of different businesses that fit their environmental, global warming, and “sustainable” energy models. They also provide loan guarantees similar to the mortgage loans guaranteed by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. You might recall hearing about one of these loans that went to Solyndra. This is the solar panel company that went bankrupt after receiving $528,000,000 in loans backed by tax payer dollars. They just laid off 1,100 workers but don’t worry. The DOE is busy funding (with your money) lots of other new sustainable energy businesses and creating lots of new jobs.

Apparently, the DOE isn’t satisfied solely with domestic energy concerns and job creation. They’re busy “investing” $960,000,000 in the Phillipines to upgrade or install renewable energy supplies from hydroelectric sources. Of course you receive all sorts of benefits from that “investment” don’t you?

Have you stopped exhaling yet? You might want to consider doing that as the EPA declared C02 a toxic pollutant that needs to be regulated and mitigated like pesticides and toxic waste dumps. DOE has jumped in to assist. They plan (this is back from 6/2010) to invest $612,000,000 of taxpayer money to reduce C02 by capturing it. The carbon police will sequester those nasty C02 emissions by capturing them and storing them underground so they don’t ruin our environment.

By the way comfort yourself by knowing this funding came from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Just think of all the jobs that will be created by capturing C02 and storing it underground!

According to the Energy Collective; “Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (aka the Stimulus Bill), DOE officially awarded $32.7 billion in grants and contract funding to clean energy and efficiency projects across the country over the past year and a half.”. And there’s more of that smart investing coming in 2011, folks. DOE plans to “invest” $70 billion (of your money) into “alternative energy …focus will shift from the maturing sectors of solar and wind to less-developed areas like biofuels and carbon capture.”

One area not to be overlooked is how the DOE is going to help you lower those high energy bills. is stepping in to do its part with its “Smart Grid” technology. “Smart grid” generally refers to a class of technology people are using to bring utility electricity delivery systems into the 21st century, using computer-based remote control and automation.” So when it looks like energy is going to get too expensive (perhaps from a collapsing currency thanks to your spendthrift government), the helpful folks at the local utility (under direction from DOE) will simply use two way computer-based communication to lower your thermostat in the winter for you – so you won’t have to – genius! Just think of all the money you’ll save when the feds lower your thermostat.

Electric bill too high during the summer? The feds will automatically raise your thermostat to reduce those pesky air conditioning bills. “A key feature of the smart grid is automation technology that lets the utility adjust and control each individual device or millions of devices from a central location.”

DOE is going to help all the struggling people out there who can’t afford to put gasoline in their cars. Ultimately, gas driven vehicles will be phased out and electric vehicles phased in. Don’t worry, important people like government law enforcement and politicians will continue to own and operate carbon based vehicles. After all, they are government and government is important – isn’t it

But you will have electric cars that don’t consume expensive gasoline and emit dangerous gases into the environment. Now you will need to reduce your driving to under 100 miles a day – but most people do that already. And these electric cars will usher in a new safer level of driving. They will be “tuned” to go no faster than the speed limit and that will be controlled externally by computer-based sensors that will monitor your every move.

Important government people will be able to “turn-off” streets to the new electric cars so they simply won’t drive there. For added safety, all cars will be tracked every place they go. This can prevent terrorist attacks. For longer trips, you’ll increasingly travel on the TSPLOST Public/Private Partnership built mass transit systems. Who wants to drive more than 100 miles anyway?

The Constitution Party says no to all of this. Unconstitutional federal agencies and their investment schemes are cons, conceived by apparatchiks from a system vastly foreign to the American way of life.

Here’s the Constitution Party approach:

  • The Constitution, itself, in Articles I through VI, enumerates the powers which may be exercised by the federal government.
  • The federal government was clearly established as a government of limited authority. The Tenth Amendment to the Constitution specifically provides that: “The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
  • We pledge to be faithful to this constitutional requirement and to work methodically to restore to the States and to the people their rightful control over legislative, judicial, executive, and regulatory functions which are not Constitutionally delegated to the federal government.
  • We call attention to the continuing need of these United States for a sufficient supply of energy for national security and for the immediate adoption of a policy of free market solutions to achieve energy independence for these United States.
  • We call for abolishing the Department of Energy.
